About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video call use case is a score that evaluates how a device handles video calls and videoconferencing in multiple conditions. This score focuses on the camera performance and the capture and playback rendering of voices.

The latest MacBook Pro’s camera had accurate face exposure with good dynamic range, along with pleasant contrast and generally accurate color rendering (only occasional unnatural-looking colors in some challenging scenes). The level of detail was high, although slight noise was sometimes visible under bright lighting conditions. The laptop managed reflections well despite its glossy screen. Although its microphones lack noise reduction, the Macbook Pro had very good and pleasant vocal timbre and intelligibility during calls. One drawback was the device’s handling of duplex speech, as two people talking at the same time could not hear one another; also, mono-only audio capture impaired intelligibility in stereo-capable voice call situations.

The Asus ExpertBook B9 OLED put in a decent all-round display and audio performance for both video call and multimedia purposes, although its camera performance pulled down the laptop’s overall placement in our ranking. During calls, its internal microphones provided good audio quality, but duplex speech was impossible as voices would completely cut each other off. For video & music, the laptop’s OLED display had excellent contrast, but inadequate maximum brightness, and overall glossiness made the screen hard to read in a bright lighting environment; in addition, playback timbre was somewhat unpleasant.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video call use case is a score that evaluates how a device handles video calls and videoconferencing in multiple conditions. This score focuses on the camera performance and the capture and playback rendering of voices.

The Asus ExpertBook B9 OLED’s camera had fairly good texture rendering, albeit hampered by a loss of fine details. Further, exposure instabilities and strong clipping were often visible, and color rendering was often inaccurate. Our engineers found it impossible to record usable low-light videos. The laptop had nice audio capture quality during video calls, but the device produced a high-frequency noise at all times, which could be annoying for a person on the receiving end of the call.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video call use case is a score that evaluates how a device handles video calls and videoconferencing in multiple conditions. This score focuses on the camera performance and the capture and playback rendering of voices.

The Dell 7340 2-in-1’s camera provides accurate color rendering most of the time, although color shading is visible. Targets are significantly underexposed in backlit scenes. The display has a good brightness range, although colors are not always accurate. With a front-facing focus, the device has very good audio capture, enhancing intelligibility and leaving out background noise in most situations. Its performance is somewhat limited when voices overlap, with obvious gating in duplex situations, and the built-in microphones don’t always pick up quiet voices.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video and Music use case score evaluates the capability of a device to reproduce multimedia usages such as videos, movies and music playback in indoor conditions. This score focuses on the display performance and audio-playback rendering.

The 7340’s display offers correct color rendering and gamut adaptation for SDR videos, and its more than 500 nits of brightness ensures satisfactory readability in all ambient lighting. For HDR content, however, the gamut is narrow, and even very saturated colors appear faded.
The display’s minimum brightness is 32 nits, which is too high for comfortable use in a low-light environment. The lack of bass and body in audio contributes to a generally sub-par music and video playback performance.

The camera on the Latitude 9440 2-in-1 laptop has a depth of field that is well calibrated to the most common camera-to-face distances on laptops, along with generally accurate target exposure. Skin-tone rendering is sometimes inaccurate and clipping in bright areas is often visible.
Hue shift near saturation and aliasing are sometimes noticeable as well. Focused on mainly front sound sources, the device achieves excellent voice intelligibility for video calls, although the efficient SNR can sometimes remove quiet voices and the duplex experience is impaired by gating. The display has a nice brightness range that results in good overall readability.

Pros

  • Excellent Windows laptop for display, thanks to a great anti-reflective, semi-matte screen, as well as good management of SDR color and brightness
  • Great audio performance during video calls, thanks to great SNR and recording loudness

Cons

  • Display gamma is not ideal for watching videos, and some colors are not accurate
  • Insufficient bass and low-midrange presence impede full enjoyment of multimedia content
  • During video calls, quieter voices may not be picked up due to the strong SNR

The LG gram Style’s excellent display performance takes top honors in our Video Call use case among all other devices tested so far, and comes in near the top in our Music & Video use case as well.

The display, in combination with its great recording capabilities during video calls, makes the LG device the best Windows device in our database to date, coming in just behind the Apple MacBook Pro 14″ and just ahead of the Apple MacBook Air (both 13″ and 15″ versions).

When evaluating the display in Video Call, our experts focus on  two things: the performance of  SDR content and the reflectivity of the screen. The LG’s display performance of SDR content was top notch, making it a perfect device for all video content outside of HDR. The screen was also very readable in all situations thanks to its good brightness range and gamma.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video call use case is a score that evaluates how a device handles video calls and videoconferencing in multiple conditions. This score focuses on the camera performance and the capture and playback rendering of voices.

The LG gram Style’s camera put in an unremarkable performance. While it had generally stable white balance, strong clipping in bright areas was often visible, and colors were often desaturated. Further, strong hue shifts near saturation were also visible. However, the LG device provided a great performance in both recording and playback, with excellent recording loudness. Its SNR effectively filtered out background noises during recording; however, the device tended to gate quieter voices during video calls. Its handling of duplex situations was mixed: when used for a meeting with several individuals facing the laptop, the performance was great, but in a one-on-one video call situation, gating was more prominent and heavily impaired voice intelligibility.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video and Music use case score evaluates the capability of a device to reproduce multimedia usages such as videos, movies and music playback in indoor conditions. This score focuses on the display performance and audio-playback rendering.

The LG device’s anti-reflective, semi-matte display screen was effective in improving readability in all ambient lighting. SDR content benefited from well-tuned contrast, good color rendering, and 600 nits of maximum brightness when playing videos. Some colors were not accurate in HDR videos, however. In still usage, maximum brightness fell below 500 nits, which was not enough to provide comfortable viewing in all lighting environments. The LG gram Style’s audio was artifact-free during playback, even at maximum volumes. Its timbre was consistently decent, particularly for upper midrange and treble, although its weaker bass and low-midrange resulted in a thin sound rendition. Dynamics were generally good, though lacking in bass precision and punch.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video call use case is a score that evaluates how a device handles video calls and videoconferencing in multiple conditions. This score focuses on the camera performance and the capture and playback rendering of voices.

The camera on the Apple MacBook Air 15″ (M2, 2023) put in a class-leading performance in our Video Call use case, with extended dynamic range, well-preserved details in most tested conditions, and low noise in well-exposed scenes. Its color rendering, particularly its rendering of skin tones, could be improved, however, and such artifacts as ringing and color quantization were visible in most conditions.

Tonal balance during voice calls was good on the Apple device, but because of its mono recordings, intelligibility could be impaired when multiple people were placed around the computer. However, it handled diffused sounds well and put in a satisfying overall capture performance.  Where the Apple device really shined was in playback, thanks to natural-sounding vocal timbres, very good dynamics, and realistic spatial rendering. Despite some gating, it handled duplex situations quite well.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video call use case is a score that evaluates how a device handles video calls and videoconferencing in multiple conditions. This score focuses on the camera performance and the capture and playback rendering of voices. Read more about how we test the use cases of Video call score here.

The MacBook Pro’s camera provided great detail in most tested conditions, as well as very good control of visual noise on well-exposed scenes. Exposure was accurate and stable in all situations.

Skins tones were accurate, but overall color rendering sometimes looked unnatural. Some artifacts such as ringing, quantization, and fringing were visible in most tested conditions. Audio capture of voices featured good, if slightly boomy, tonal balance. Envelopes were sharp and well preserved. Noise reduction is disabled by default, so noise levels were quite high. (The device relies more on videoconferencing apps to handle noise reduction.) Capture is mono only, which can impair intelligibility in stereo-capable voice call situations. Voice playback was excellent overall, with warm and realistic voices that were easily localizable and intelligible. Duplex situations induced some gating that may impair voice intelligibility in the most challenging situations.

About DXOMARK Laptop tests

DXOMARK's Video and Music use case score evaluates the capability of a device to reproduce multimedia usages such as videos, movies and music playback in indoor conditions. This score focuses on the display performance and audio-playback rendering. Read more about how we test this use case here.

The MacBook Pro’s top-flight HDR rendering had a wide gamut, accurate EOTF, and very high peak measured brightness compared to other laptops.  Its SDR rendering was not perfect though, with tones warm overall; and EOTF, while contrasted, looked unnatural. The display handled reflectance well. Audio rendering of multimedia content was excellent, with faithful and very pleasant tonal balance. Basses were deep (though sometimes slightly resonant), with more power than those of any other tested laptop. Dynamics were also excellent, with sharp and precise impacts and strong punch.

Video gamut HDR
The primary colors are measured both in HDR10 and SDR. The extracted color gamut shows the extent of the color area that the device can render. To respect the artistic intent, the measured gamut should match the master color space of each video.
Display reflectance measurement (SCI)
Measurements above show the reflection of the device within the visible spectrum range (400 nm to 700 nm). It includes both diffuse and specular reflection.
